A Saturday or two ago my new best girlfriend (no, he is not gay but for this blog's sake I am going to call him Jolene), and I ventured into the cheap-o movie theater to see Lars and The Real Girl.
After debating whether this was a "dollar theater" or not (we paid three dollars each) we determined that no it wasn't technically a dollar theater because they charged more than a dollar. We purchased snacks (red vines and hot tamales for him and a medium pepsi for me) and settled in for the movie.
The commercials sucked, as always. The preview for the the Bee Movie was unexpectedly awesome because the fabulous Eddie Izzard was a major player in it, and then the feature film began.
Jolene and I sat on seat apart, which pretty much sums up our relationship, which confuses almost everyone we know. He and I are friends, we get along, we chat, we hang out and we play Dragtastic Bingo, nothing more.
Anyway, back to the movie. Ryan Gosling (who every girl fell in love with in the The Notebook, and I don't need to explain that if you have seen it.......if you haven't, see it,) isn't very pretty, but he is amazing..........and he sings.
Enough babble, now about the movie. Ryan plays Lars Lindstrom, the odd brother who lives in the garage. There is clearly something wrong with Lars. Gus and Karin, Lars' brother and sister-in-law do their best to include the reclusive Lars, much to his chagrin.
They are delighted when Lars announces that he has a guest, Bianca. However the movie takes a turn when Bianca comes to dinner, you see it turns out that Bianca is not so much a live girl but more of an anatomically correct sex doll.
The subtle humor, the true to life reactions by Gus (PaulSchneider) and the acceptance of Bianca by the entire town (which I will admit is a bit difficult to believe, however this is a MOVIE so all was wonderful) make this movie amazingly good.
Bianca comes to life, no not literally, but in Lars' eyes and through the acceptance of the people who love him.
Through Bianca Lars is able to learn how to interact with people. He becomes comfortable in his own skin, and he even finds a real, real girl.
I have read many reviews of this movie and it appears that people either love it or hate it.
I know why. The people who love it are like me, and Jolene. We can let go a little and accept things that we know are a little silly. We don't have to analyze everything to death and not everything has to make sense. Those who hated it either wanted to see Gosling banging the doll or couldn't unclench their asses enough to realize that sometimes a little fantasy is good thing.
Doesn't matter, I love it, Jolene loved it and Ryan Gosling is an amazing actor.
Love,
J

My Imaginary boyfriends think this one is going to be a hit
Of late I have adored Ryan Gosling. He is cute and talented, what more can a girl ask for?
I hope this flick is as good as I think it will be.
Ryan (because we are totally on a first name basis) is Lars a delusional young man who buys a life-size sex doll over the Internet, and then
falls in love with her.
YES, he FALLS IN LOVE with her!!!!
Should be good.
Love,
J
