30 Days Til the Vampire Apocalypse

So I watched 30 Days of Night the other night ... alone, in my room, at night, with all the lights off. This was a bad idea, really. So then I exit my room and my roommate says 'did you see that electric pole that's shaped like a stake down the street? It's got a sign on it that says Use In Case of Vampire Attack!'

Great, that's just great. Now I'm never gonna sleep again.

It's a beautiful ride

So here's the deal, I love John C. Reiley. I mean really a lot. I think he is just a great and underrated actor.

I am at this very moment watching the credits of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It was genuinely...okay. A couple scenes cracked me up, but mostly it was just kind of there. It's like if you're listening to Tenacious D on your iPod while your mom is talking to you. You're only half way paying attention but still laugh at the funny parts you catch.

I say sure, see it. See it cause my boy John is completely awesomely wonderful. See it cause of Jack White's Elvis interpretation. See it cause Paul McCartney is pissed at Jack Black. Don't see it if you want to laugh your ass off though.

Oh, and I actually really liked the music!

Oh, the wonderful things I've done!

As you know from my co-blogger's last entry, I have been seeing the wide world for the last month or so. Let me tell you a little secret about being a jet-setter, you spend an ungodly amount of time on airplanes. Airplanes have three sources of entertainment: 1) watching other passengers negotiate the increasingly small aisles, occasionally falling on others 2) constantly rearranging yourself to try to find a nonexistent comfortable position 3) watching movies.

Let's explore number 3. During the ... let me count, 18 + 3 + 19 + 3, 43 in flight hours I watched several movies:

Jane Austen Book Club
Lars and the Real Girl
Things We Lost in the Fire
Enchanted
August Rush

Sadly these are the only ones I remember, I'm sure the rest were lovely.

Holding Down The Fort!

While the fabulous Madam M is out gallivanting around the world (and I do mean around the world, she e-mailed me from Cambodia the other day), I am here to do all the hard work.

Despite the fact that this is a movie spot I want to talk television. I love television, although I have spent plenty of time without it, so it isn't as important as say fresh batteries. Anyway, my current living situation dictates that we have cable with many bells and whistles (and the NFL Package HOORAY for that, I'm not being sarcastic, I love watching football).

With a million channels I am always on the look out for something awesome (whether awesome means bad, good or just completely demented)
to watch and over the years I have discovered (occasionally on my own, and other times with help) some amazing shows that need to be seen by everyone.

In no particular order check out, if you can find them:

-Profit
-Wonderfalls
-Dexter
-Scrubs
-Weeds
-Life On Mars
-Doctor Who
-Torchwood
-Project Runway
-Firefly
-Hell's Kitchen
-Twin Peaks
-The Tick
-House
-Psych
-CSI (the original)
-Dead Like Me
-Battlestar Galactica (for so many reasons)
-Life
-Jeykll
-Strangers With Candy
-Absolutely Fabulous
-The Riches

There are more that I enjoy or find delightful in some way, this is the highlights.

Check them out, they will entertain.

Love,
J

Me, Lars, The Real Girl and My New Best Girlfriend

A Saturday or two ago my new best girlfriend (no, he is not gay but for this blog's sake I am going to call him Jolene), and I ventured into the cheap-o movie theater to see Lars and The Real Girl.

After debating whether this was a "dollar theater" or not (we paid three dollars each) we determined that no it wasn't technically a dollar theater because they charged more than a dollar. We purchased snacks (red vines and hot tamales for him and a medium pepsi for me) and settled in for the movie.

The commercials sucked, as always. The preview for the the Bee Movie was unexpectedly awesome because the fabulous Eddie Izzard was a major player in it, and then the feature film began.

Jolene and I sat on seat apart, which pretty much sums up our relationship, which confuses almost everyone we know. He and I are friends, we get along, we chat, we hang out and we play Dragtastic Bingo, nothing more.

Anyway, back to the movie. Ryan Gosling (who every girl fell in love with in the The Notebook, and I don't need to explain that if you have seen it.......if you haven't, see it,) isn't very pretty, but he is amazing..........and he sings.

Enough babble, now about the movie. Ryan plays Lars Lindstrom, the odd brother who lives in the garage. There is clearly something wrong with Lars. Gus and Karin, Lars' brother and sister-in-law do their best to include the reclusive Lars, much to his chagrin.

They are delighted when Lars announces that he has a guest, Bianca. However the movie takes a turn when Bianca comes to dinner, you see it turns out that Bianca is not so much a live girl but more of an anatomically correct sex doll.

The subtle humor, the true to life reactions by Gus (PaulSchneider) and the acceptance of Bianca by the entire town (which I will admit is a bit difficult to believe, however this is a MOVIE so all was wonderful) make this movie amazingly good.
Bianca comes to life, no not literally, but in Lars' eyes and through the acceptance of the people who love him.

Through Bianca Lars is able to learn how to interact with people. He becomes comfortable in his own skin, and he even finds a real, real girl.

I have read many reviews of this movie and it appears that people either love it or hate it.
I know why. The people who love it are like me, and Jolene. We can let go a little and accept things that we know are a little silly. We don't have to analyze everything to death and not everything has to make sense. Those who hated it either wanted to see Gosling banging the doll or couldn't unclench their asses enough to realize that sometimes a little fantasy is good thing.

Doesn't matter, I love it, Jolene loved it and Ryan Gosling is an amazing actor.

Love,
J

We all deserve to die, have a super day!

This is several weeks overdue but I have seen a wonder of a movie: Sweeney Todd. My friend, as we left the theatre, said it was gross, disturbing, hilarious and sad; I have to agree.

So the premise is this, in case you haven't heard, a man is arrested on false charges to get him out of the way of the evil judge who is in lust with the innocent man's wife. When the man is released from years of indentured servitude he vows revenge on the judge. Unfortunately his plan for vengeance is thwarted so his landlord says 'hey, plenty of people deserve to die so why don't you kill other people and I'll bake those folks into a meat pie which I will then sell back to the clueless public.' Hilarity ensues.

The movie was directed by Tim Burton, you always know what you're gonna get with his films, it'll be quirky, visually unique and with plenty of darker than dark humor. Excellent cinematography, especially in the by the sea scene.

Johnny Depp deserves his Oscar nod for this one, vacant crankiness never looked better.

Did I mention it's a musical?

My Evening With Seth

The very idea of spending hours in bed with Seth Rogen is enough to make a number of women (and some men) swoon. Last night I did just that.

Through modern technology (my Ipod), I got to snuggle down under my pretty comforter and enjoy Seth's antics for a while.

First was Knocked Up with the lovely Katherine Heigel.

Overall I did not find this movie a waste of my time. However I just could not figure out the relationship between the two lead characters. There was zero chemistry, there were no one moment of "AH HA" for them. I still don't get it.

In fact there was more chemistry between Paul Rudd's character, Pete, and Rogen's Ben, than any other characters in the movie.

Don't get me wrong, I laughed. I was proud of Ben for getting his life together, and I was most impressed with two subtle tributes to one of my favorite movies Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, and did I mention how adorable that baby was.

Not to say that it isn't plausible that these two could get together and make it work, but there was something lacking in the connection. The only time I saw a real connection and fire between them was during the very loud screaming fight that they had in the doctor's office. However that may just be a reflection on my own experience.

I must admit the movie was cute and funny. I did enjoy Rogen and I hope to see much more of him (but not his naked ass), I just felt that there was something lacking.

Next up in my Rogenfest was Superbad.

Very much along the lines of many of my very favorite teen angsty movies, with much more obscene language and many more references to sex.

First I have to say how adorable Michael Cera is. I loved him in Arrested Development and I can't wait to see Juno.
The movie was funny and required little to no thought which is perfect for the genre.

Hijinks ensue, but they are important because they are all in the pursuit of booze and ultimately sex.

As Officer Michaels, Rogen was an added pleasure to the movie.

There were moments of pure hilarity in both movies, I would suggest that if you want some laughs and you have some time to kill, check them out.

Love,
J
